Introduction: | The San Yu Adventist School has a history that spans a century, from 1907 till present. It is a product of a merger between San Yu High School and the Seventh-Day Adventist School.
In 1907, the Malaya Mission of Seventh-day Adventists started a Eastern Training School in a house called Mount Pleasant off Thomson Road. After relocating several times, the school was eventually rooted at 273 A Upper Serangoon Road. From 1921 to 1926, several buildings were completed to support the vision and expansion of the school. In 1929 and 1938, the name of the school was changed to Malayan Seminary of Seventh-day Adventists and Union Training School respectively. The school was closed from February 1942 to September 1945 due to the Japanese occupation during World War II. The school was reopened in October 1945. The school started to offer courses from Primary One to Senior Cambridge from 1948. In 1949, the name of the school was changed to Malayan Union Seminary and college-level courses were offered. The name of the school was subsequently changed to Southeast Asia Union College in 1958. During the period of 1961-1972, by regulations from the Ministry of Education, Singapore, the primary and secondary education school adopted the name The Seventh-day Adventist School. The Seventh-day Adventist School separated from the Southeast Asia Union College. Each had its own governing board. In 1996, in view of the acquisition of the land at Upper Serangoon Road by the Government for the construction of the North-East MRT, the Seventh-day Adventist School and the San Yu High School’s school boards voted unanimously for a merger and called itself the San Yu Adventist School. San Yu High School on the other hand was set up in 1958 by the West Malaysia-Singapore Mission. In 1962, the administration of the school was handed over to the Seventh-day Adventist Chinese Church. In 1970, the school started pre-university Arts Stream. In 1972, the structure was reorganised and the school was jointly operated by Chinese Church and the Mission. In 1978, a new four-storey building was completed. In 1980, the school started pre-university Commerce Stream and in 1982, the school was appointed as an examination centre for GCE ‘O’ and ‘A’ Levels examinations. In 1995, pre-university classes were discontinued. In 1996, the school board voted a merger with the Seventh-day Adventist School in view of the acquisition of the land at Upper Serangoon Road by the Government. In 1997, the newly-merged school began to operate as one under the name San Yu Adventist School at Upper Serangoon Road. A new four storey block was to be built and the existing two blocks to be renovated at Thomson Road. In 1998, the Ministry of Education approved the merger and the new name San Yu Adventist School. In 2000, the new four-storey block was completed and the school began the new millennia at 299 Thomson Road, Singapore 307652. San Yu Adventist School (SYAS) is a fully self-supporting school owned and operated by the Seventh-day Adventist Conference Singapore. |
